National Service Scheme (N.S.S.)

"Not Me But You”

Human beings cannot live alone. They have to live in a society and have to inculcate a practice of interrelation and interdependence among themselves. N.S.S. unit of our college, since its inception, has been looking after to inculcate these principles among the volunteers in particular and students in general. The National Service Scheme under the aegis of the Government of India is designed for the H.E.I.s in our country to play a pivotal role to create "Good Samaritans" from among the students who are expected to be responsible citizens in future. The N.S.S. unit of our college, in the true spirit of altruism, takes up programmes round the year.

With the beginning of new academic year, the willing students get registered as N.S.S. volunteers. Regular classes, preferably once a week, are conducted under the supervision of the N.S.S. officer to orient the volunteers regarding the motto of the N.S.S. By virtue of this orientation the leadership qualities among the volunteers along with a democratic relation between the leader and the volunteers are developed, a sense of civic and social responsibility is created, needs and problems of the community in the surrounding locality are identified and the capacity to meet emergencies are built up among the volunteers with a view to implementing the goals of National Service Scheme. Besides, social significance of the activities to be carried out are also dealt with.

Programmes duly chalked out in advance are taken up round the year. Concerted initiatives are made to carry out awareness drives and beneficial schemes especially for the underprivileged section of population. These include thalassemia awareness and detection programmes, blood donation awareness programmes, Special camp for plastic free society, Yoga Camp etc. conducted in collaboration with competent organisations from the locality or beyond. It is noteworthy that, time and again blood donation camps have been organized in collaboration with the West Bengal Voluntary Blood Donors Association and Ujjiban, a social organization of the locality. Even during Covid -19 lockdown period, when the education institutes had to go Online, the N.S.S. unit of the college had organised a Webinar on " Covid -19 pandemic: The Role of N.S.S." involving resource persons from different higher education institutes of the neighbouring area. This event was a great inspiration for the N.S.S. volunteers in particular and students in general.

In addition to all these the N.S.S. unit has active role in the celebration of the Republic Day, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s birthday, the National Youth Day, Independence Day. The N.S.S. volunteers are active participants in the College campus cleaning programme and Gardening as and when initiated by the College unit.
All such programmes are conducted under the supervision of the N.S.S. officer and in adherence to the respective guidelines and disciplinary norms. Benefits of these activities, initiated and carried out by the N.S.S. unit, directly or indirectly, are disseminated in the surrounding locality. The N.S.S. unit has its special focus on its adopted village Kundalpara within the jurisdiction of the Achhra gram Panchayet.

Around 100 volunteers get registered every year. Prof.Tirtha Mondal, Assistant Professor of political Science, is presently working as the N.S.S. officer in coordination with the college administration and all concerned.
