History
The Department of History is one of the constituent departments of Deshabandhu Mahavidyalaya. Ever since the inception of the college in the year 1973, the Department of History has been working hard to impart productive knowledge in this discipline. Initially, it began its journey with a General Course under the University of Burdwan while an Honours course began in 2000-2001. At present, the course curriculum is affiliated with the Kazi Nazrul University. The department's approach towards its discipline is very comprehensive and has an extensive emphasis on exploring new facts, new interpretations of existing facts and analysis of the historical trends in India and the world. The department actively engages in academic research and a student-centric teaching-learning-evaluation process throughout the year. The faculty members present research papers at national and international conferences and publish research articles in books and journals of national repute. Academic excursions are undertaken under the supervision of the faculty outside the college hours to help engage the students with the curriculum and beyond. Regular student evaluations are made based on class and home assignments, tutorials, student seminars and college and university examinations. The Department also offers value-added courses on museology and digital archiving which would enable the students to explore historical investigation, stimulate curiosity, and preserve cultural memories. Recently, the Department successfully implemented a major research project funded by the Endangered Archives Programme of the British Library, U.K., and developed a digital archive of the archival material preserved in the Sadharan Brahmo Samaj under the able guidance of Dr Tridib Santapa Kundu, Principal of this college who specializes in modern Indian history. The department can boast of having a dedicated “Centre for Research and Preservation of Cultural Heritage” which regularly undertakes research projects, seminars, workshops and Internship Programmes.
