Geography

The department of Geography at Deshabandhu Mahavidyalaya was established in the year 2003. Initially the department started with 40 students of B.A. general course and in 2007 it finally received the recognition to open honours course under the curriculum of Burdwan Universiy. Currently the department follows semester system (CBCS) under the curriculum of Kazi Nazrul University, Asansol. The department of Geography boasts well equipped and fully functional laboratories with sophisticated instruments, gadgets and software; which are used for recording weather data, testing soil characteristics, surveying, GIS, GPS mapping and interpretation. Besides Laboratory work, regular field surveys of different dimensions are also organized to help students gain more thorough knowledge and practical experience regarding the subject. The present faculty of the department consists of two capable Assistant Professors and one Contractual Teacher (appointed by College Authority). There is also one non-teaching staff, who looks after the laboratories and the department. The department of Geography is much sought after and reputed part of the institution especially regarding number of students being admitted per year and academic performance. The perfect balance of traditional as well as modern innovative teaching-learning processes are used to improve the academic, professional, social and mental well-being of the students.

GNSS and Applications of Digital Remote Sensing

A workshop on the topic of GNSS and Applications of Digital Remote Sensing was organized by Department of Geography under aegis with IQAC Deshabandhu Mahavidyalaya, Chittaranjan on 27-28 May, 2022. The main purpose of this workshop was to acquaint the students about the Global Navigation Satellite systems and application of digital remote sensing in the field of landuse and land cover mapping, forest monitoring through digital image classification by Q-GIS software. Dr. Tridip Santapa Kundu, Hon'ble Principal of the college inaugurated the program and Dr. Apurba Kumar Roy coordinator of IQAC was also present. Dr. Mukul Kamle, Asst. Professor of Geography, co-oridated the workshop. Two resource persons were SomnathMahato, Engineer (Electronics and Communication, Microwave) and Prof. Santanu Jharimuni (Msc. in Geo spatial Science). Both of them instructed and helped the students to learn about the detail procedure of analysis and interpretation of satellite image through Q-GIS software in college computer laboratory. Around 50 students of Geography Department participated in this programme. They were very happy to attend such type of workshop in college.
